It is our belief that the general decline of worship constitutes more than a cultural/historical loss. The sacred presence of the cathedrals and churches signifies something even more profound and more lasting than the buildings themselves. They signify the transformed (or at least striving) lives of congregants as they are guided by the principles of Christianity: to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. The decline of these ideals would be an incalculable loss.

The Congregation project intends to be an expression of love and encouragement toward, and unity with the Christian community in England – denominations working hard and against increasingly daunting odds to nurture faith in Jesus Christ. We hope to encourage religious participation, not overtly, but by witnessing and documenting the beauty of sacred spaces and of sacred, selfless service.

Congregation will avoid traditional news-style investigative reporting. Instead, viewers will simply spend time in reflection — being with those who minister and with those who benefit from that ministry, being in sacred spaces, experiencing uplifting music.

 

Congregation unapologetically exalts the value of worshipping God and reaching out to others. Seeing the presence of God and the evidence for community and service in the constructed world and in the natural world. Hearing the words of great religious thinkers, past and present, discussing the importance of keeping religious participation alive and thriving.

Cumulatively, these experiences may deepen a viewer’s interest in and affection for godly things. We would love to see viewers reconsider the possibility of attending their own congregations, deepening their reverence for the sacred, and participating in both the traditional and non-traditional ennobling efforts of churches.
